“You Don't Need To Know All The Answers To Generate The Hotel Room Revenue You Need.”

You know you need to improve your room occupancy but maybe you are having difficulty developing a marketing strategy that you are confident will pay off?

Dear Colleague

I have been working with operators of small independent hotels and pubs with letting rooms for long enough to understand the two main issues that hold people back from achieving the hotel room revenue they want: It is either a:

  • lack of time to dedicate to marketing your business or
  • lack of tactical skills that you know will work over the long term.

Sometimes it is both!

Developing room revenue has always needed different skills to those needed for food and liquor; it also takes much longer to generate room revenue and you have to be really confident that you are on the right course.

The Internet has made everything more complicated but at least it means that independent operators like you can now compete with the chain branded operations.

From working with many independent operators of rooms I have discovered that there are two main reasons why you might be failing to maximise your revenue:

  • Trying to be all things to all people rather than targeting your rooms in a laser like fashion at specific target markets.
  • Not investing enough time, effort and money in making sure that your website actually justifies your room rate.

Of course there are many other possible reasons but these are the ones I come across most often.

We had really fallen behind with our marketing tactics. Michael helped with a new website, moved us from a paper to an online booking system, targeted our Photograph of Rob Atkinsonroom product for a specific market and developed our featuring on 3rd party websites which now deliver over 30% of our turnover.

As a result we have increased occupancy and RevPAR year on year and continue to work with Michael on new initiatives.”

How do I work with you to help your business?

Mostly I listen to what you say, trying to find out what you want to achieve, what resources and personal skills you have and where you are in your market.

I then work to help you develop your goals, so that we all know where you are trying to take your business.

My main role is to help you develop the skills that you need to generate the revenue you need (I give you guidance, not answers) by passing on the knowledge I have developed from my experience (I have written a book about marketing independent hotels which may interest you).

As we work together on developing your business we build trust between us so that we form a really effective team.

So what can you do about it?

I believe that building a successful, sustainable and profitable hotel business is a simple step-by-step process and so long as you follow the steps everyone, whatever their experience, can become successful.

In other words you do not need to know all the answers, but what you do need is the commitment to see it through and make it work.

He advised on the physical room set up for our target market, helped us learn about distribution via 3rd party sites and our own website. Our occupancy continues to improve month on month.”
